YouTube frequently engages in testing new features, many of which eventually become standard for all users. In its latest experiment, the platform is focused on enhancing its search capabilities by enabling users to identify songs even when they are unfamiliar with the title. Here's an overview of what YouTube is planning to implement.

Upcoming YouTube Feature Under Testing

According to information from YouTube's support page, a new feature is currently undergoing testing. This feature aims to assist users in discovering songs by allowing them to hum melodies. Alternatively, if a song is playing in the background and its name slips your mind, you can record a segment of it to aid in identification. If this concept sounds familiar, it's because applications like Shazam (which is owned by Apple) are renowned for offering such functionalities.

To activate this feature, you'll need to tap on the microphone icon situated next to the search bar. From there, you can either record the song being played or hum the tune for a duration of at least 3 seconds. Following this, YouTube's voice search will endeavor to recognize the song. Once the song is successfully identified, users will be presented with the official song content, along with relevant videos or Shorts posted by users within the YouTube app.

Currently, this functionality is being tested and is accessible to a limited group of Android users globally. Unfortunately, there is no official information regarding when it will be rolled out universally, including for iOS users. Moreover, the reliability of this feature remains uncertain – it's unclear whether YouTube accurately distinguishes between songs and humming sounds to produce accurate results.

Furthermore, YouTube is also in the process of testing a feature called the Channel shelf. This innovation consolidates multiple uploads from a single content creator into a unified location. This enhancement aims to streamline content discovery for viewers and simplify the content showcasing process for creators. In recent times, the platform has also been experimenting with AI-driven video summaries for YouTube videos. These summaries appear on watch and search pages, helping users decide whether they want to engage with the content.
